This was when the 'colored' races were enslaved and later, when many of them were freed. It was the most controversial period in our history, but the worst thing about it was the violence. Because of the violence, a lot of the African-Americans in the south considered this part of their 'proud' history. This event happened mostly because of a small group of people who did a lot of work and worked very hard. Other people helped to start this country and to maintain it until today. Today this history is considered one of the most important parts of the US.The 'war on poverty' is also a great example of the best things in the US history. This is another historical fact that has a direct impact on our lives. This is when the government took away many of the people's freedom, but did it in order to help the people in the society. This also taught the American public that this government does exist, and that we do not have to live with poverty.Another example of the best things in the US history is when many of the pioneers began the building of our country. Because of the different groups who helped in building our country, they were able to come together as a group and build a better future for themselves. By working together, they built a better nation.Anothe r example of the best things in the US history is when the civil rights were first achieved. During this time, many people wanted to be treated as equal to other people. This is the basis for the beginning of the civil rights movement. This eventually lead to the beginning of the economic freedoms, the beginning of the ability to choose what you want to eat and the ability to be in charge of your own life.In fact, there are many other examples of the best things in the US essay topics. However, the above is only a small part of the history of this country. Common Spelling and Grammar Errors Should You Use Its or Its
Common Spelling and Grammar Errors Should You Use Its or Its According to the readers of my blog, the distinction between itââ¬â¢s (with an apostrophe) and its (without an apostrophe) is the top pet peeve and common error out in the writing world. This article attempts to explain the distinction between the two words and when to use its or its. Itââ¬â¢s is a contraction. Most of us have heard of and are familiar with contractions. Hereââ¬â¢s how they work: If you want to say ââ¬Å"here isâ⬠and be less formal about it, squash the words together and substitute an apostrophe for the last vowel (i) to create heres.à If you want to say ââ¬Å"do notâ⬠less formally, squash the words together and substitute an apostrophe for the last vowel (o) to create dont. This process of contraction is how we get many words such as: canââ¬â¢t; doesnââ¬â¢t; arenââ¬â¢t; thereââ¬â¢s; and (drumroll please)â⬠¦ itââ¬â¢s! How simple is that? If you want your word to mean ââ¬Å"it isâ⬠or ââ¬Å"it hasâ⬠then just make a contraction: itââ¬â¢s. Examples: It is time for bed. = Itââ¬â¢s time for bed. It is a girl! = Itââ¬â¢s a girl! It has been raining for days. = Itââ¬â¢s been raining for days. These examples seem simple enough. I think where people get flummoxed is when they want a word meaning ââ¬Å"belonging to ââ¬Ëit.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Itsâ⬠is possessive. Why is this one confusing? When something belongs to Harry we add an apostrophe after Harry and say itââ¬â¢s Harrys. When something belongs to the barber we add an apostrophe and say itââ¬â¢s the barbers. However, when it comes to saying something belongs to it, the apostrophic form goes out the window, i.e. we do NOT use an apostrophe. Something belonging to it is its. Why is there no apostrophe in its? Note there are other times we do not use an apostrophe to show possession. When something belongs to her we say itââ¬â¢s hers. When something belongs to him we say itââ¬â¢s his; when something belongs to us we say itââ¬â¢s ours and when something belongs to them we say itââ¬â¢s theirs. There are many irregular constructions here. Yet somehow most people donââ¬â¢t make mistakes when it comes to these other possessive forms. Itââ¬â¢s its that continues to baffle us. You might notice something in common about all the examples where apostrophes are not used to show possession: they are all a part of speech we refer to as a pronoun. Pronouns are our shortcuts so that we do not have to keep referring to people and things by their name or other descriptor. They are a referential shortcut. They replace, or substitute for, nouns. I will write more about pronouns in a future article where I will talk about the use of ââ¬Å"I and ââ¬Å"me.â⬠For now you can look atà the University of Ottawaââ¬â¢s Writing Center grammar page under What Is a Pronoun?, for more information. Some examples of pronouns are he, she, they, you, her, him, us, our, their and its. Hereââ¬â¢s your rule to remember: When forming a possessive PRONOUN, do NOT use an apostrophe. Since ââ¬Å"itâ⬠is a pronoun, we do NOT put an apostrophe after it to make it possessive. Just as you would not write ââ¬Å"herââ¬â¢sâ⬠or ââ¬Å"ourââ¬â¢s,â⬠do not write ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢sâ⬠when you are intending to show possession. Another trick is to remember the phrase Its raining apostrophes! This sentence means It is raining apostrophes, so you can remember that when you mean it is, you should use its, with an apostrophe. Itââ¬â¢s my fervent hope this article has cleared up some common misperceptions and that its contents will be distributed widely by its readers! If you or someone you know needs writing or editing assistance, contact The Essay Expert. We can help clear up any apostrophe problems youre having.

A Rose for Emily Essay Example for Free (#5)
A Rose for Emily Essay A Rose for Emily (76) , Emily Grierson (51) , Homer Barron (38) , Rose (2) company About StudyMoose Contact Careers Help Center Donate a Paper Legal Terms & Conditions Privacy Policy Complaints ? The Use of Personality Traits to Foreshadow in Faulknerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠In William Faulknerââ¬â¢s short story, ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠, Emilyââ¬â¢s reclusiveness, arrogance and old-fashioned attitude demonstrate her refusal to adapt to the present. Throughout the plot, glimpses into Emilyââ¬â¢s life and behavior foreshadow the conclusion of the story. The author uses third person voice and a series of flashbacks to illustrate examples of her reclusive behavior, the arrogance that being a Grierson has instilled in her and how her thinking has remained in years gone past. Although Emily is referred to affectionately as a ââ¬Å"fallen monumentâ⬠by the unnamed townspeople, she is scarcely known and rarely leaves her house. In her younger years she was seen occasionally with Homer Barron, a contractor hired to pave the sidewalks. While Homer was courting her, the two took Sunday drives in public, which set the town abuzz. After his mysterious disappearance, however, Emily goes into full reclusivity. The townââ¬â¢s politicians are even forced to pay a visit to Emily at home when they finally decide to press the issue of paying property taxes which a Colonel Sartoris had graciously deemed paid in full for the remainder of her life. The Board of Aldermen are briefly admitted into the house and given only a quick glimpse of the woman Emily Grierson has become in old age. Outside of china painting classes Emily gave to the children of some of ââ¬Å"Colonel Sartorisââ¬â¢s contemporariesâ⬠(page 48) ten years earlier, it was the most anyone had seen of her in some time. Consequently, when Emily finally passes on, her funeral is attended by a variety of townspeople who are overly curious ââ¬Å"to see the inside of her houseâ⬠(page 43). At this point, Faulkner has foreshadowed the fact that something monumental will be found there. Emilyââ¬â¢s arrogance was ripe fodder for her contemporaries. She retained a Negro servant, Tobe, throughout her life in the tradition of her family, but apparently he was just as committed to being a recluse as she and was only seen on market shopping days, speaking little. Everyone thought the family had always ââ¬Å"held themselves a little too high for what they really wereâ⬠(page 44) and seemed to relish anything Emily did that could make her seem more human. When a horrible smell developed in the house and wafted through the neighborhood it was chalked up to bad housekeeping because ââ¬Å"a manâ⬠¦[cannot] keep a kitchen properlyâ⬠(page 45). This, the townspeople declared, created a ââ¬Å"link between the gross, teeming world and the high and mighty Griersonsâ⬠(page 45). They wanted an opportunity to feel sorry for Emily and rejoice in the fact that even though her last name was Grierson, she was human after all. Even so, family name carries enough respect that former Confederate soldiers ââ¬Å"to whom the past is not a diminishing roadâ⬠(page 49) feel obliged to attend her funeral service. Emilyââ¬â¢s arrogance is what keeps the people of the town interested in the details of her life, and death. Perhaps because of Emilyââ¬â¢s old-fashioned attitude and ideals, she was used to taking matters into her hands and this, too, foreshadows Homerââ¬â¢s Barron end. Although motor cars are a normal sight in town, Emily never bought one and preferred, instead, to ride about with Homer using an old-fashioned horse and buggy. When postal service came to town some years earlier, Emily would have none of it, refusing to allow a mailbox and numbers affixed to her old house. Anything she needed could be delivered or Tobe was sent out with his market basket on shopping day to bring it back, bypassing modern convenience. Faulkner uses these vagaries of Emilyââ¬â¢s personality to foreshadow the conclusion when the townspeople swarm through the house to reach the upper bedroom which has been closed for 40 years. It is because of her reclusiveness, arrogance and old-fashioned attitude that the strange old lady purchases rat poison, kills her lover and locks him inside a bedroom for many years, not to be discovered until her death. A Rose for Emily. (2016, Nov 21).

Worse effects are caused by traffic congestion that results into unnecessary combustion of gasoline (EPA 5). Nitrous oxide is green house gas that is produced by cars and nitric acid products produced, this product is also a major contributor of global warming. He also states that water vapor is considered a green house gas, the increase in water vapor in the atmosphere is mostly contributed to the presence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as temperatures increase more water is vaporized and this results into an increase in heat trapped in the earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere (Philander 15). Deforestation is also considered to have contributed to global warming, human economic activities such as timber production and agriculture contribute to the reduction of forest cover on the earth surface, when this happens the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere declines in two ways, one of the ways in which deforestation contribute to an increase in carbon dioxide is that the decomposing carbon material increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and second trees utilize carbon dioxide to make their food referred to as photosynthesis which reduce carbon levels in the atmosphere and a reduction in the
